So you asked ChatGPT to create some awesome web copy? Now you need an AI copy editor to make sense of it.
Today's cash-conscious business owners and marketing managers know there's a fast solution for generating web content.
Why pay a human being to do your writing when free or cheap AI tools will do it for you?
AI content tools took the world by storm at the end of 2022 and have proliferated since then. But they come with a colossal catch.
Half of what they say is rubbish.
Understanding the trouble with AI-generated content for business owners
If you've not yet tried using AI to write content for your business, I'd encourage you to do so. This is what will probably happen:
-
You'll initially be impressed by the results. Especially as it has cost you nothing.
-
Then you'll delve a little deeper into the copy and realise that it's actually a little flat.
-
And maybe you'll spot a couple of things that are slightly wrong – or completely made up.
-
The content also seems oddly familiar – so you run it through an AI detector tool and see that it's 98% likely to have been written by AI.
-
Determined not to give up, you pass it through AI 'humaniser' software – but end up with something virtually unreadable.
-
And then you read that Google and Bing may be penalising AI-generated content. Panic sets in!
But you just can't get away from the fact that all this lovely content was FREE. What are you going to do with it?
Here's one option: hire an AI copy editor to turn everything into something that you can use.
AN AI COPY EDITOR CAN:
Spot and strip out well-worn phrases that make AI spotters' radar go into overdrive.
Add headings and subheads and ensure that the content makes sense, is accurate and adds value.
Upload the edited content to your WordPress site (if needed).
Help you maximise your use of AI for idea generation, content outlines and other marketing tasks.
Hi, I'm Mike. I won't use AI to write your copy, but if you're determined to try artificial intelligence and need a seasoned editor to 'fix' it, try me.
'But can't I just use my AI copy straight from the source?'
No!
Possibly
You risk posting poor or inaccurate content that can do more harm than good.
If you're desperate to flesh out a website in record time and have zero budget... good luck!
Sure!
If your prompt is so detailed that it's almost impossible for AI to go wrong.
Did you know?
33hrs
is how long the average content marketer spends each week on new content.
90%
of all online copy is expected to be AI- generated by 2026.
57%
of all web content today is estimated to be AI-generated. Yes – already!
What does all this mean for your business?
The truth of the matter is that AI can seriously speed up certain aspects of the copywriting process.
While most copywriters won't actually ask AI to do their writing for them (I certainly don't), they do recognise that technology can help streamline things.
The big difference between copywriters and business owners is that we copywriters live and breathe copy – so we can spot AI-generated clangers from a mile away.
But if everyone else is getting on the AI-generated copy bandwagon and you want to do the same, I think it would be hypocritical of me to say, "Good luck with that!" and walk off in a huff.
My approach as a freelance website copywriter is to accept that AI is here and recognise that many marketers and business owners are committed to it – not least because it can save them lots of time and money.

What is AI copy editing? And what's wrong with ChatGPT's copy anyway? A copywriter who offers AI copy editing services brings their skill as a writer and/or editor to the table (I have both!). While AI copywriting tools can rapidly generate content that often appears high-quality, the results are receiving lots of bad press for their generic nature. That's because AI engines can only rewrite other things they have read online! Creating original human-made copy from scratch takes time, and while many businesses value tailored content and are prepared to pay for it, some simply can't. A compromise is to get ChatGPT or a similar AI engine to create content for you and then ask a seasoned copywriter to knock it into shape (for want of a better term). The resultant copy should be less likely to foul of future Google mandates that penalise AI content – if that ever happens. And it should also offer a better user experience all round.

Is AI- generated content killing my SEO potential? What does Google say? This is the $64,000 question. Google says they do not penalise AI-generated content per se. However, they certainly downgrade poor-quality content – and generic, AI-generated content may well fit the bill. More importantly, AI content is almost certain to fail to capture the essence of your brand or your tone of voice. Customers like to make a connection with a brand: they appreciate authenticity and originality. This is why blindly posting 5,000 words of AI-generated content without any human intervention is generally regarded as a bad idea. Note: the whole "Google isn't penalising AI content" thing could change overnight – and may even have done so since this was written in September 2024.

What are three 'safe' ways to use AI for my web content writing? Great question! And AI can definitely help. Here are three things to try: 1/ Blog post idea generation: AI writing tools are great at coming up with new titles and subjects. 2/ Article outlines: if you're planning on writing a blog about 'How to choose an executive travel provider' and don't know where to begin, ChatGPT will give you some prompts. 3/ Improving amateur copy. If you're not much of a writer but still like to write, simply paste your web copy into one of the many AI tools and say: improve this. Try a few iterations until you're happy. And always try to keep your target audience (and brand voice) in mind!
