You know how you tell yourself you'll get something done by next Friday? That was me... two years ago.
I have a thing on my desktop called '20 building blocks for a website' that I knocked up on Canva on May 10, 2023. Almost two years to the day later, I have finally turned it into something more useful than a little PDF that sits in the top right-hand corner of my computer.
You can have this little freebie if you want it, and if you're new to websites or perhaps have one that's in severe need of a makeover, it'll help. But first, a quick back story...
Around three years ago, when I noticed that my workload had transitioned from 'all kinds of copywriting plus some freelance writing work' to 'almost exclusively website copywriting', I started to set out what I felt were the foundations of a great website.
Up until then, I had mostly been doing what instinctively felt right, based on my many years as a writer and editor. But I thought that if I 'codified' it, I'd be able to do a better job for the nice people handing me money.
Inspiration from a smorgasbord of SaaS sites
Around that time, many of the best-looking new websites sold software as a service (SaaS), so I started studying them. Hundreds of them. Unlike creaky heritage sites, they were modern and direct, attuned to the needs of a younger audience.
They were sharp and clean – and most did a rather splendid job of explaining how they solved a problem.
So far, so good – but these weren't the only players in town. We also had gloriously swish, minimalistic sites like Apple; information-rich sites such as every news website in existence; and laser-focused sites that were more like landing pages with a single CTA.
Based on this research, I put together my '20 building blocks for a website' PDF. Which, as I mentioned, I spent a few days fine-tuning last week, turning it into a magnificent little freebie that's all yours if you email me.
If you do and you're feeling kind, write 'subscribe' in the subject line. Because then I will legally own you (and can send you the odd email about copywriting and stuff).
A hot new addition to my homepage
Most visitors arrive at my blog via my homepage, but if that's not the case and by some wonder of SEO wizardry you came directly to this page after typing 'free resources for copywriters' or 'how to make homepage better', please check out my homepage to see my 'Website homepage checklist PDF' (clearly, I didn't spend all that long coming up with a name for this!).
There's a big green 'Free guide' thingy plonked on top of it, so you won't miss it.
So what does it this dazzling PDF actually do? What can you expect when you sign up for your free website homepage checklist?
Well, it's super-easy to follow and it will show you:
More than 15 different elements that can be included on a homepage
Hints and tips on design and layout
A brief intro to CTAs (calls to action)
An idiot-proof way to switch features into benefits
And more.
Just head on over to my freelance copywriting homepage and download yours today!
