There is a gloriously random nature to working as a freelance copywriter. In a week, you might get:
Zero inquiries.
10 truly dreadful inquiries.
One cracker and a couple of donkeys.
Multiple variations on the above.
In March 2025, I started some work with devices for teams by HardSoft computers – the UK's number 1 tech leasing specialists. First step: learning what the hell tech leasing and something called 'DaaS' is all about. Turns out it stands for Devices as a Service: what they do is like Netflix, but your subscription is for computers instead of telly.
HardSoft had initially contacted me three or four months earlier asking about writing a white paper, but the trail had gone cold. While it seemed like this was a dead-cert for the 'inquiries that came to nothing' folder, I gave them a nudge and their co-founder, Andy Morgan, got back in touch.
A great brief and lots of creative freedom
HardSoft have been around for many years, and their tech-on-demand solutions are becoming increasingly popular with medium- and large-sized companies. Leasing makes sense in so many instances – why buy when you can have up-to-date tech you can easily change every year or two?
The numbers all make sense – plus they remove all the hassle of device management. In fact, a pretty cool line of their own they were already using was 'DaaS with zero faff'.
Nice.
My work so far has involved making changes to the devices for teams website, with a focus on improving clarity. There's also been some advertising work, which I love doing. I don't get to do it as often as I'd like, as people often turn to agencies for this kind of work. But when it happens, I'm all-in.
Andy and his team gave me lots of latitude – which every copywriter loves – and lots of positive feedback, too.
A month or two in, I asked Andy for a testimonial, and he sent me this:

More ads and website work on the way
I thought that was a pretty awesome testimonial – and our work together continues, with a raft of exciting projects planned for the coming months, including more ads and some additional website fine-tunery.
Around the same time as Andy's work came in, I was asked to create some Facebook ads for a company named SenseCheck, which connects SMEs with a team of marketing experts who will give them a second opinion on a marketing idea they've been thinking about using.
That was another fun project, and Roger Jackson, the company founder, has promised me a testimonial, too. I must chase him.
